Club Volleyball (USAV, JVA, AAU)

How and where college volleyball coaches see recruits. Rules checked Oct 25, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.

Why club matters

College women's volleyball is played in the fall, when most high school seasons run, so college coaches often can't watch high school matches. Much of the evaluating happens at club tournaments in the winter and spring. Men's college volleyball is a spring sport, so men's club and high school seasons overlap with it in different ways by state.

The main club organizations

  • USA Volleyball is the national governing body. Most junior clubs belong to one of its regions, which run local and qualifying tournaments.
  • Junior Volleyball Association (JVA) is a club-owner organization that runs its own tournament series.
  • AAU Volleyball runs its own events, including large national tournaments.
  • Many clubs play events from more than one organization. We don't rank them; check each organization's site for membership, insurance and age rules.

Using tournaments

  • Ask your club director which colleges usually attend your events, and email those coaches 1-2 weeks before with your court, first match time and jersey number.
  • Remember the D1 dead and quiet periods (see the timeline). The women's D1 calendar has several spring quiet periods when coaches can't evaluate off campus.

Choosing a club level

The right team is one where you play real rotations against good opponents and where the club helps with college exposure. Ask a club how many of its players went on to play college volleyball, at what levels, what the full season costs including travel, and how its staff communicates with college coaches.

High school volleyball still counts

High school volleyball is great for development, leadership and film. Check your state association's rules on playing club and high school volleyball in the same season; find yours in the NFHS State Association Directory.
