Women's and men's volleyball have different seasons and calendars

Women's volleyball is a fall college sport and men's volleyball is a spring college sport. Women's volleyball is sponsored in NCAA Divisions I, II and III, the NAIA and all three NJCAA divisions. Men's volleyball is smaller: D1 and D2 schools play one combined National Collegiate championship, and D3 has its own. Every page on this site says which one it means.

Club volleyball is where most recruiting happens

College women's volleyball is played in the fall, the same time as most high school seasons, so many college coaches do most of their evaluating at club tournaments in the winter and spring. Your club tournament schedule is one of the most useful things you can send a coach. See Club volleyball (USAV, JVA, AAU).

Beach volleyball is a separate sport

NCAA beach volleyball is a women's spring sport with its own roster limit and transfer window. This section covers indoor volleyball; see the beach volleyball note.
