Film & Highlights
How to make volleyball film work for you in recruiting. Rules checked Oct 25, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.
Why film comes first
Most coaches decide whether to keep evaluating you from film before they see you in person. Your film gets you onto a coach's list to watch at your next tournament.
Highlight video basics
- Put your best clips first. Many coaches decide in the first 30 seconds.
- Keep it to about 3-5 minutes from your most recent season.
- Mark yourself before each clip (an arrow or spotlight) and say your jersey number at the start.
- Film from behind the end line, raised if you can, so coaches see the whole court and your approach.
- Show what your position is judged on: hitters should show attacks from different sets and passing; setters should show location, tempo and decisions; middles should show blocking footwork and quick attacks; liberos and DS players should show serve receive and digs.
- Include your grad year, height, position and club team on the opening card.
Full-match film
Coaches often ask for one or two full matches after a highlight catches their eye. Keep the camera steady and wide.
Keep it current
Update your video after each season or big tournament, and send coaches the new link. New film is the best reason to follow up.
