Money and offers
Scholarships, Offers & Signing
What a volleyball offer is, when you can sign, and how aid works at each level. Rules checked Oct 25, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.
Verbal offer vs. written offer
A verbal offer isn't a signed agreement, and either side can walk away. Since 2024, Division I uses written offers of athletics aid instead of the National Letter of Intent. Ask the coach exactly what's being offered, for how long, and when it can be put in writing.
Signing dates, 2026-27
- D1 written offers: not before Aug. 1 of senior year (Bylaw 13.9.3.1). You can't sign until the signing date.
- D1 and D2 volleyball: the "all other sports" date, starting Nov. 11, 2026. The final date depends on each school's policy for awarding aid.
- NJCAA: women's and men's volleyball Letters of Intent from Nov. 1 (2026-27 Sports Procedures Chart).
- Signing dates don't apply to four-year transfers.
Aid by level
- NCAA D1: at schools in the House settlement, rosters are capped at 18 for women's volleyball and 18 for men's volleyball, and schools can fund any or all of those spots. Before the settlement the limits were 12 scholarships (women, a head-count sport) and 4.5 equivalencies (men) (College Sports Commission). D1 schools that didn't opt in to the settlement can give up to those 2024-25 limits without triggering the settlement rules, and their roster sizes are set by the conference or school (NCAA settlement Q&A, Feb. 2026). Ask each D1 coach whether the school opted in.
- NCAA D2: up to 8.0 equivalencies for women's volleyball and 4.5 for men's volleyball, usually split into partial scholarships.
- NCAA D3: no athletic scholarships. Athletes can get need-based and non-athletic merit aid.
- NAIA: up to 8 for volleyball (2026-27 NAIA Handbook).
- JUCO (NJCAA): up to 14 Letter of Intent signees/scholarships per team for women's and for men's volleyball. Division I can give full scholarships; Division II is limited to tuition, course fees, books and up to $250 in required supplies; Division III gives no athletic scholarships (2026-27 NJCAA Sports Procedures Chart).
Apply for all the aid you can
- File the FAFSA each year.
- Some colleges also require the CSS Profile.
- Ask whether academic aid can be combined with athletic aid. In men's volleyball and at partial-scholarship levels, academic money is often a big part of a package.
Compare offers apples to apples
- Total cost of attendance, minus all grants and scholarships, equals what your family really pays.
- Is the athletic aid for one year or several, and what conditions apply?
- Is there any NIL or revenue-sharing piece, and who is paying it? See NIL.
