Transfers

The Transfer Portal

How the transfer portal works in softball and why it matters to recruits. Rules checked Oct 27, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.

2026-27 D1 softball windows

  • All spring sports, including softball: Dec. 1-15, 2026.
  • Softball: June 14-28, 2027.
  • Other schools can contact a player once they're in the portal.

What it means for high school recruits

  • The June window comes after the Nov. 11 signing date, so some D1 staffs hold spots for transfers.
  • Keep communicating with coaches through the spring and summer, and keep D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO options alive.
  • Ask directly: "How many high school players do you expect to sign in my class, and how many transfers?"

D2, D3 and NAIA transfers (four-year to four-year)

  • D2: no transfer windows. A player can give their school written notice of transfer at any time. After the player finishes an NCAA transfer education module, the school has 7 days to enter them in the Transfer Portal. To contact a D1 or D3 player, a D2 coach follows that division's rules.
  • D2 eligibility: a four-year transfer can play right away if they would have been academically and athletically eligible at the old school, had they stayed. Otherwise they become eligible after one full-time term. A player who already played in the championship segment that year can't play in it again at the new school (Bylaw 14.3.5).
  • D3: no transfer windows. Since Aug. 1, 2026, a player can start the notification of transfer process at any time. After the education module, the school has 7 days to enter them in the Transfer Portal. A D3 player can instead sign a self-release form that lets other D3 schools talk with them for 30 days.
  • D3 eligibility: a player can play right away if they would have been academically eligible at the old school, never practiced or played in college, or sat out the sport for two straight years. Otherwise they become eligible after one full-time term (Bylaw 14.5.5.1).
  • NAIA: transfers don't sit out a residency period, though some conferences have their own rules. Every transfer completes the NAIA Transfer Player Eligibility Statement before playing. A coach contacted by a player at another NAIA school must notify that school in writing within 10 days, unless the player has a release from their athletic director. A public post announcing a transfer can count as that first contact.
  • NAIA academics: after the first two semesters, a player needs 24 credit hours passed in the last two terms (36 in three quarter terms). Seasons played at two schools in the same year count as two seasons.
