Softball has its own calendar. Most families find out late.

In Division I softball, almost everything opens on one date: 1 p.m. Central time on September 1 of junior year. That covers calls, texts, emails, off-campus contact and visits. Before then, coaches can still read your emails and watch your video. D2 opens June 15 after sophomore year, and D3, NAIA and JUCO coaches can talk with you sooner. The families who start early are the ones already in a coach's file when contact opens.

This playbook shows you how to get there yourself, without paying for an expensive recruiting service.

What's inside

  • A 30-day quick start. Four weeks of checklists: player email, verified numbers, skills video, a clean recruiting profile, a target list and your first emails.
  • Key dates by grade, freshman through senior, including D1 softball's single start date: 1 p.m. Central on September 1 of junior year. D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO dates are clearly labeled.
  • Rules by level: D1 contact limits, D2, D3, NAIA and NJCAA contact, visits and athletic aid.
  • Roster limits after the House settlement: what the 25-player D1 softball roster limit means for recruits, and what to ask every coach.
  • The eligibility clock: the new D1 and D2 age-based model (and D3's pending vote), gap years and reclassification.
  • GPA & academics: core GPA worksheet and D1/D2/D3/NAIA/JUCO academic basics.
  • Target list builder with a Reach/Target/Likely system and the "one real reason" rule.
  • The numbers coaches ask about, by position (pitcher, catcher, infield, outfield, hitters and slappers), plus the verified-only rule.
  • Skills video guide by position: length, angles, labeling and where to host it.
  • Social media setup and cleanup checklist with a copy-ready bio template.
  • The subject line formula, the master coach email, 3 school-specific versions (D1, D2/D3, NAIA/JUCO) and 4 follow-up templates.
  • Travel ball, camps and exposure events: how to spend where your target schools' coaches actually are.
  • Official and unofficial visit guide with questions for coaches, players and academic staff.
  • Offer comparison worksheet, NIL basics, the JUCO path, scam red flags and parent etiquette.
  • Printable player info checklist, recruiting budget and a parent glossary.
  • Directory of 159 programs (56 D1, 27 D2, 27 D3, 24 NAIA, 25 JUCO) with links to their official softball, staff and questionnaire pages.

Plus: the Excel recruiting tracker

Four tabs, ready to use. Target Schools comes preloaded with all 159 softball programs. The Outreach Log calculates your next follow-up date 21 days after each send and flags it once it's due. There are also Player Profile (with softball measurables) and Events and Camps tabs (with a budget total).

Built on sources you can check

Rules are checked against official NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA material (last checked Oct 19, 2026), and anything we couldn't confirm on an official site is labeled. We don't make up statistics or "what D1 wants" charts, and we don't copy coach names or emails. Coaching staffs change, so the playbook sends you to each school's official staff page instead.

Who it's for

Parents of high school softball players, freshman through senior year, at any level, from D1 hopefuls to players aiming for D2, D3, NAIA or JUCO. Freshman and sophomore families get a head start, and junior and senior families can catch up fast.

How school giveback works

What is it? 20% of the $29.99 purchase price goes to the athletic program of the high school you enter at checkout.

Who gets it? The school's athletic department, with your sport noted on each payment and report so the school credits that team. A sport's booster club can receive it only if the head coach requests it in writing and the athletic director approves in writing. It's never paid to individuals, including coaches. Next Level Pathway pays it from its own revenue, so your purchase isn't a tax-deductible donation.

When is it paid? Payouts are made monthly once the school has claimed its share.

Does my school need to be signed up? No. Enter any high school. If it hasn't claimed its giveback yet, we hold its share for that sport and reach out to the athletic department. If it's still unclaimed 12 months after your purchase, that share goes to youth softball, such as sponsoring youth teams, leagues, or youth softball charities, chosen by Next Level Pathway each year, with receipts kept and a short public note on this site.

What do I need to do? Just type your high school and choose your sport at checkout. Please use the school's full name and city so we can match it.
