Film & Highlights
How to make soccer film work for you in recruiting. Rules checked Oct 22, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.
Why film comes first
Most coaches decide whether to keep evaluating you from film before they see you in person. Your film gets you onto a coach's list to watch at the next showcase.
Highlight video basics
- Put your best clips first. Many coaches decide in the first 30 seconds.
- Keep it to about 3-5 minutes from your most recent season.
- Mark yourself before each clip (an arrow or spotlight), since everyone is moving.
- Show what your position is judged on: defenders should show 1v1 defending, recovery runs and passing out of the back; midfielders should show scanning, receiving under pressure and passing range; forwards should show movement and finishing; keepers should show shot-stopping, crosses and distribution.
- Include your jersey number, grad year, club team and position at the start.
Full-match film
Coaches often ask for one or two full matches after a highlight catches their eye. A wide-angle view that shows the whole field is better than a zoomed-in phone video.
Keep it current
Update your video after each season or big showcase, and send coaches the new link. New film is the best reason to follow up.
