Position-by-Position Notes

Position notes for high school soccer recruits. Rules checked Oct 22, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.

Goalkeepers

  • Keepers are recruited differently: coaches want shot-stopping, handling crosses, distribution with both feet and communication.
  • Many programs carry only a few keepers, so ask coaches directly how many they're recruiting in your class.

Defenders

  • Center backs: 1v1 defending, aerial duels, organizing the line and passing out of the back.
  • Outside backs: recovery speed, overlapping runs and crossing.

Midfielders

  • Scanning, first touch under pressure, passing range and work rate both ways.

Forwards and wingers

  • Movement off the ball, 1v1 attacking, finishing with both feet and pressing.

Versatility

If you play several positions, list your main one first. Ask coaches where they see you; many recruit "athletes" and move them.
