Eligibility & Amateurism
What wrestling families should know about eligibility and amateurism. Rules checked Oct 27, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.
Register early
- D1 and D2 recruits need an NCAA Eligibility Center Certification Account before an official visit or signing; D3 recruits can use a free Profile Page.
- NAIA recruits register with the NAIA Eligibility Center.
- NJCAA: a high school diploma or equivalent.
Amateurism
- Every D1 and D2 recruit goes through the NCAA Eligibility Center's amateurism certification. Answer its questions honestly and keep records.
- Prize money from open or freestyle events beyond what the rules allow can affect NCAA eligibility. Ask before you accept money.
- International wrestlers have extra steps; start early.
We don't guess here
