Grade by grade
9th grade (freshman year)
- Wrestle a full high school season, and add club or freestyle/Greco in the off-season if your family chooses. Check your state association's rules.
- Take the right core classes from day one (see GPA & academics). Grades from 9th grade count.
- Create the wrestler's own email and a free NCAA Eligibility Center Profile Page. Save full-match film from every big tournament.
10th grade (sophomore year)
- Build a first highlight video and send it, with your results and schedule, to realistic schools.
- Go to a few college camps at schools on your list.
- June 15 after sophomore year: D1 women's coaches may start calling and emailing; D2 off-campus contact and official visits open; D3 off-campus contact opens. Aug. 1: D1 women's off-campus contact and visits open.
11th grade (junior year)
- Your junior season, state tournament and national results matter most.
- D3 official visits open Jan. 1.
- April 1 of junior year: D1 men's coaches can call, text, email and DM you. Have film, results, weight and transcript ready.
- June 15 after junior year: D1 men's off-campus contact and camp recruiting conversations open. Upgrade to an Eligibility Center Certification Account before any D1 or D2 official visit.
12th grade (senior year)
- Aug. 1: earliest written D1 offer. Aug. 15: D1 men's official visits open.
- Nov. 1: NJCAA Letters of Intent. Nov. 11, 2026: D1 and D2 signing opens (2026-27).
- Your senior season and state tournament still count. Many rosters fill in the spring, so keep D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO options alive.
Transfers compete for your spot
- College wrestlers can enter the D1 transfer portal only during set windows. For 2026-27: men's Apr. 1-30, 2027; women's Feb. 28 - Apr. 13, 2027.
- Both windows come after the Nov. 11 signing date, so some D1 staffs hold spots for transfers. Ask every coach how many high school wrestlers and transfers they expect to add.
