Scholarships & Offers

Plain-English basics on college baseball scholarships and offers. Rules checked Oct 18, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.

Verbal offer vs. written offer

A coach can tell you about an offer, but under NCAA Division I rules a school can't give you a written offer of athletics aid before August 1 of your senior year of high school. What you eventually sign is a written offer (financial aid agreement), so read it carefully.

A verbal offer isn't a signed agreement. Ask the coach exactly what's being offered, for how long, and when it can be put in writing.

The National Letter of Intent is gone in D1

  • In October 2024, Division I replaced the National Letter of Intent (NLI) with written offers of athletics aid. The old signing-date formula now applies to those written offers.
  • Division II adopted the same change, though the NCAA says D2 schools may still use the NLI.
  • After you sign a written offer, other schools that give athletic aid can't recruit you or contact your family or coaches about you.
  • You can ask to be released from that no-contact protection within 30 days after the head coach leaves or announces he's leaving.

Aid by level

  • NCAA D1: at schools that opted into the House settlement, aid is no longer capped at 11.7 baseball scholarships. Schools can fund any or all of their 34 roster spots. See Roster Limits.
  • NCAA D3: no athletic scholarships. Athletes can get need-based and non-athletic merit aid, and athletic ability can't factor into aid.
  • NAIA: up to 12 full-scholarship equivalents in baseball, which can be split among any number of players.
  • JUCO: NJCAA scholarship rules vary by division. Ask each school what it offers and confirm with the NJCAA.

Apply for all the aid you can

  • File the FAFSA each year. Colleges use it for federal and many school-based aid programs.
  • Some colleges also require the CSS Profile. Check each school's financial aid page.
  • Ask each school whether academic aid can be combined with athletic aid. Policies vary by school.

Compare offers apples to apples

  • Total cost of attendance, minus all grants and scholarships, equals what your family really pays.
  • Is the athletic aid for one year or several, and what conditions apply?
  • Is academic or need-based aid part of the package, and is it renewable?
  • Ask the questions on our visits page before you decide.
