Going pro

NFL, CFL, UFL & Pro Paths

How the NFL Draft and other pro football routes work, and what they mean for NCAA eligibility. Rules checked Oct 20, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.

NFL Draft eligibility

  • A player must be at least three years removed from high school graduation to enter the NFL Draft early.
  • Players who have used their fourth season of college eligibility are automatically eligible.

Testing the waters (college players)

  • You can ask the NFL's College Advisory Committee for a draft-round evaluation. For the 2026 draft, the requests were due Dec. 12, 2025 (final deadline Jan. 2, 2026).
  • An underclassman can enter the draft once and keep NCAA eligibility if he isn't drafted and declares that he's returning within 72 hours after the NFL's early-entry deadline (for 2026, by midnight Jan. 26, 2026).
  • Agent rules matter: get the current NCAA memo and talk to your compliance office before signing with anyone.

CFL, UFL and other leagues

  • The Canadian Football League and the United Football League sign former college players, mostly after their college careers. Each has its own eligibility and roster rules; check the league directly.
  • NCAA rules generally take away eligibility if you sign a pro contract or get paid above expenses to play.

The realistic picture

Very few high school players reach the NFL. Pick a college where you'd be happy even if football ended tomorrow, and keep your grades up.
