Transfers

The Transfer Portal

How the transfer portal works in football and why it matters to recruits. Rules checked Oct 20, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.

2026-27 D1 football window

  • FBS and FCS: Jan. 4-13, 2027. Starting this cycle, football has a single 10-day window beginning the first business day after Jan. 1; the old April window is gone.
  • A separate window can open after a head coach is hired or announced.
  • Coaches and staffs are also now barred from attending other teams' games (with limited exceptions), to cut down on tampering.

How it works

  • A D1 player who wants to transfer is entered in the NCAA Transfer Portal during the window. Only then can other schools contact them.
  • Four-year transfers can sign once they're permissibly in the portal; high school signing dates don't apply to them.
  • Junior college players moving to four-year schools follow the 2-4 transfer rules. See JUCO & prep.

What it means for high school recruits

  • Because the portal window opens after the December early signing period, some D1 staffs hold spots for transfers and finish their high school class in February.
  • Keep communicating with coaches after December, and keep FCS, D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO options alive.
  • Ask coaches directly: "How many high school players do you expect to sign in my class, and how many transfers?"
