Transfers

The Transfer Portal

How the transfer portal works in basketball and why it matters to recruits. Rules checked Oct 20, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.

2026-27 D1 basketball windows

  • Men's basketball: April 6-20, 2027.
  • Women's basketball: April 5-19, 2027.
  • Each window opens the day after that sport's national championship game and runs 15 days. A separate window can open after a head coach is hired or announced.

How it works

  • A D1 player who wants to transfer is entered in the NCAA Transfer Portal during a window. Only then can other schools contact them.
  • Four-year transfers can sign a written offer of athletics aid once they're permissibly in the portal; high school signing dates don't apply to them.
  • Junior college players moving to four-year schools follow the 2-4 transfer rules instead. See JUCO & prep.

What it means for high school recruits

  • Many D1 programs now fill a lot of their 15 spots with college transfers, often in April after the season.
  • Some coaches wait until after the portal window to make final decisions on high school seniors. Keep communicating, and keep D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO options alive.
  • Ask coaches directly: "How many high school players do you expect to sign in my class, and how many transfers?"
