Campus visits

Official & Unofficial Visits

What to know before you visit a college campus. Rules checked Oct 20, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.

Official vs. unofficial

  • Official visit: paid for in whole or in part by the college.
  • Unofficial visit: paid for by your family. It only counts as a recruiting visit if athletics is involved (meeting coaches, an athletics tour, free game tickets). Touring campus on your own like any other student isn't restricted.

When D1 basketball visits can start

  • Men's: unofficial visits at any time (adopted April 2026), except dead periods and July. Official visits from Aug. 1 of junior year.
  • Women's: unofficial visits at any time, except dead periods and the July evaluation periods. Official visits from the Thursday after the NCAA women's championship game of junior year, and not during July evaluation periods. Since 2023, unlimited official visits, one per school.
  • Either way, signed recruits are exempt from the July limits.

D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO

  • D2: official visits from June 15 before junior year, outside dead periods.
  • D3: official visits from Jan. 1 of junior year.
  • NAIA: no grade-based visit limits.
  • JUCO: a school-paid visit requires a finished junior year.

Before a D1 or D2 official visit

  • Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center (a Certification Account, not just a free Profile Page).
  • Be on the school's institutional request list.
  • Send the school a copy of your high school transcript.

How many, how long, who comes

  • In D1 there's no limit on how many schools you officially visit, but each school can host you only once before Oct. 15 after you finish high school (a second may be allowed if the head coach changes).
  • A D1 official visit can last up to two nights, and the school can cover costs for up to two family members.

Proposed D1 change (not adopted yet)

On Oct. 7, 2026, the Division I Cabinet introduced a proposal that would let schools pay for transportation, lodging and entertainment for a recruit and four people coming with them on an official visit. It could be adopted as early as January 2027. Until then, current limits apply.

Questions to ask on a visit

  • Where do I fit on your roster, and how many players at my position are you bringing in, including transfers?
  • Did your school opt into the House settlement, and what does aid look like for my class?
  • How do freshmen earn minutes?
  • Can I talk with current players without coaches present?
  • Can I study my intended major and play?
