Coach outreach
Emailing college track & field coaches
The emails that get opened are short and specific: grad year, events, PRs with result links, and where a coach can see you compete next.
Who to email
- Email the head coach and the coach for your event group (sprints/hurdles, jumps, throws, distance, multis); many staff pages say who that is. Use the "Coaching staff" link in the directory, and make sure you open the men's or women's page you mean.
- Fill out each program's recruiting questionnaire too, if it has one.
When to email
- You can email coaches at any grade. D1 coaches can read your emails and look at your results before they're allowed to reply.
- D1 coaches can reply starting June 15 after sophomore year. D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO coaches can reply anytime.
- Send a short update after every new PR and before championship meets.
Subject line formula
Grad year, main event and PR, high school and state.
Subject: [Grad Year] | [Event] [PR] (FAT) | [High School], [ST] | Results link Subject: [Grad Year] [Event] | Competing at [Meet], [Dates]
Sample coach email
Keep the body under about 150 words. Put your results link near the top. Never attach video.

I am interested in [University] [men's/women's] track and field, specifically [one real reason]. [Full Name] Class of [Grad Year] | [Events] | [High School] [Cell] | [Email] | [NCAA ID if any]
Send it from the athlete's own email address, one school per email. Make sure your high school coach knows you're reaching out; college coaches often call them.
Follow-ups
- After a new PR: a two-line email with the mark, the meet and the official results link.
- Before championship meets: your schedule and events.
- Every few weeks in season: new marks, film or grades. Something real each time.
- No reply after two or three tries? Keep the school on your list and focus on programs that answer.
