NCAA Division I cross country and track and field (men's and women's)
D1 cross country and track and field follow the general recruiting rules, with one exception (Bylaw 13.1.1.1.9, adopted Oct. 7, 2026): off-campus contact opens on the same date as calls and messages.
- June 15 after sophomore year: calls, texts, emails, DMs and recruiting materials (Bylaws 13.1.3.1, 13.4.1), and in-person, off-campus contact with you or your family (Bylaw 13.1.1.1.9). Seven recruiting opportunities across cross country and track combined, no more than three off-campus contacts (Bylaw 13.1.7.2.1).
- Aug. 1 before junior year: official visits and athletics-involved unofficial visits (Bylaws 13.6.2.1.1, 13.7.1.1), and recruiting conversations at the school's own camp or clinic (Bylaw 13.12.1.5.1).
- Aug. 1 of senior year: earliest written offer of athletics aid (Bylaw 13.9.3.1).
- Nov. 11, 2026: D1 and D2 signing opens for 2026-27; the final date depends on each school's policy.

Grade by grade
9th grade (freshman year)
- Compete in cross country, indoor and outdoor track if your school offers them, and try more than one event group. Check your state association's rules on club meets.
- Take the right core classes from day one (see GPA & academics). Grades from 9th grade count.
- Create the athlete's own email and a free NCAA Eligibility Center Profile Page. Save every official result link, and note FAT or hand timing and wind.
10th grade (sophomore year)
- Send your PRs and result links to realistic schools; update them after each season.
- Go to a college camp or clinic at a school on your list.
- June 15 after sophomore year: D1 coaches may call, message and contact you off campus; D2 off-campus contact and official visits open; D3 off-campus contact opens. Aug. 1: D1 official and unofficial visits open.
11th grade (junior year)
- Your junior cross country, indoor and outdoor marks matter most.
- D3 official visits open Jan. 1.
- Upgrade to an Eligibility Center Certification Account before any D1 or D2 official visit. Plan visits around D1 dead periods (Mar. 12-13 and June 9-12, 2027).
12th grade (senior year)
- Aug. 1: earliest written D1 offer.
- Nov. 1: NJCAA Letters of Intent. Nov. 11, 2026: D1 and D2 signing opens (2026-27).
- Your senior seasons still count: send new PRs as they come. Many rosters fill in the spring, so keep D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO options alive.
Transfers compete for your spot
- D1 cross country and track athletes can enter the transfer portal only during set windows. For 2026-27: Nov. 23 - Dec. 7, 2026 and June 14-23, 2027.
- Ask every coach how many high school athletes and how many transfers they expect to add in your events.
