Events, Marks & Timing

How track and field events and marks work for recruits. Rules checked Oct 27, 2026. Rules change, so confirm details on the linked sources and with each school's compliance office. This is general guidance, not legal or eligibility advice.

Event groups

  • Sprints: 60, 100, 200, 400, relays.
  • Hurdles: 60H, 100H (women), 110H (men), 400H.
  • Jumps: high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump.
  • Throws: shot put, discus, hammer, javelin, weight throw (indoor).
  • Distance: 800 through 10,000, steeplechase, cross country.
  • Multis: indoor pentathlon (women) and heptathlon (men); outdoor heptathlon (women) and decathlon (men).

Recording a mark

  • Give the official result link for every PR.
  • Say whether a time was FAT (fully automatic timing) or hand-timed. In NCAA rules, fully automatic times take priority over manual times.
  • For sprints, hurdles and horizontal jumps, include the wind reading in meters per second.

High school vs. college

  • Some implements and hurdle heights differ between high school and college. Ask coaches how they read your marks.
  • Check that each school offers your events and seasons: some sponsor only cross country, or only outdoor.
